A Quasquicentennial Cultural Heritage Showcase: What's Your Story?
September 21, 2023: PORT ARTHUR, Texas- Some of us have been here all our lives, but how and why did our ancestors settle in Port Arthur?
There are many interesting stories regarding the backgrounds, customs, and traditions of families who ended up here. Since the city was chartered, Port Arthur has evolved into a melting pot of rich culture, with families settling here from all corners of the world.
During our city’s 125th anniversary year, the Quasquicentennial team has set aside a few hours on October 14 when our backgrounds can be highlighted for others to learn about our highly diverse blend of cultures that make up the city’s population.
The result? Well, we know of residents representing at least two dozen countries – some large and small countries that span overseas continents, some from very small islands throughout the world, and many from throughout all parts of the Americas. We’re providing an opportunity for the sharing of information about the various areas that comprise the population within Port Arthur, and we invite anyone interested to join in on the Cultural Heritage Celebration from 1 – 5 p.m., October 14 at the Port Arthur “Bob Bowers” Civic Center. We believe it will be enjoyable for local residents to showcase their heritage in the ways they choose to do so.
Participation and attendance at this event will be free to those who attend and to those who are showcasing their backgrounds. Some cultures may exhibit photographs, crafts, or other items from their homeland; others may want to bring together a group of individuals to present a brief musical, dance, or another form of entertainment from within their culture; while others may choose to demonstrate the preparation of a specific type of food – or even share a food sample for tasting. An informational meeting will be held at the Port Arthur Public Library at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, September 25, to answer questions about the Cultural Heritage Showcase.
Several student groups have already expressed interest in showcasing their talent, and we look forward to all entertainment. Rest easy, though – it will not be an extravagant showing … entertainment promises to be brief and simple, and the celebration team will coordinate to make it easy on those who choose to participate.
Guests will be welcomed through an entryway of flags of the countries being represented, music will welcome attendees through the door…
Won’t you join us?
The Port Arthur Public Library is planning to feature some of the display items at the Port Arthur Public Library for a few weeks after the event has taken place, so this will provide a setting where the public can view some of the interesting backgrounds beyond the day of the Cultural Heritage event.
